Forest reserve bill ‘betrays’ Aborigines

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre has labelled forest peace deal legislation a betrayal of Aboriginal people. Long-awaited legislation was tabled in the Lower House yesterday outlining how new reserves will be created if a forest peace deal is struck. The Parks and Wildlife Service will create formal reserves under any forest peace deal. The Aboriginal Centre’s Michael Mansell says the bill has not properly considered Aboriginal management of reserve areas. “It means that not only that Aboriginal people cannot manage the land that is agreed between government, industry and the Greens but it means that Aboriginal people could be charged with trespass on practising, or trying to protect, our own heritage on crown land.” Environmental and industry groups have a month to reach an a…
